Pottawatomie Massacre
Who? John Brown and a few followers
What? After recent attacks on Lawrence, KS (anti-slavery hub), John Brown led his followers to Pottawatomie Creek where he butchered 5 poeple (presumably pro-slaveryites).
When? May 1856
Importance: Violence brought shame to the free-soil cause. The pro-slavery settlers also retaliated, thus, initiating the civil war in Kansas. Brown is hailed a hero in the north, but a murderer in the south. Basically a prelude to the violence to come in the American Civil War.
